These medieval monasteries were built during the heyday of Armenia during the reign of the Kyurikyan dynasty (X-XIII centuries) - then the monasteries acted as important centers of education. In Sanahin there was a famous school of miniaturists and calligraphers, and there was a repository of books and manuscripts.
